Weekend Recap

Read about the Bluejays' 2-1 performance in Wichita over the weekend and take a look ahead at the Nebraska game Tuesday.

Creighton (28-14, 11-7) traveled to Wichita State (31-24, 13-5) for the last regular-season meeting between Missouri Valley Conference rivals. The Jays took two of three against the Shockers at Eck Stadium and will close the season with four games at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

Friday, May 10 – Creighton (27-13, 10-6) 6 Wichita State (30-23, 14-5) 5


Creighton took advantage of two Wichita State errors en route to taking the series opener at the Eck. The top of the Jays lineup, Brad McKewon, Federico Castagnini and Jake Peter, each drove in a run in addition to having a hit. Starter Tommy Strunc went the first five innings before handing the game over to the bullpen. Mark Winkelman threw 3.1 innings, keeping CU in the lead, and Bryan Sova came in to pick up the save, getting the final out.

Saturday, May 11 – Creighton (28-13, 11-6) 3 Wichita State (30-24, 14-6) 1


Game two saw the bottom of the lineup providing the offense with Landon Lucansky and Jerry Mitchell combining for two RBIs. Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a run scored in addition to the run he drove in. On the mound, Nick Musec threw the first five innings, striking out six and allowing just one run. Mark Lukowski earned the rare four-inning save, allowing just two hits to WSU with two strikeouts.

Sunday, May 12 – Creighton (28-14, 11-7) 1 Wichita State (31-24, 15-6) 4


Creighton struck first in the series finale, scoring in the second inning when Brennan Murphy drove in Reagan Fowler. The Jays offense was unable to produce any more runs off Shockers' starter Garrett Brummett. Austin Groth allowed three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before being chased by the Shox. CU held Wichita scoreless the rest of the game, but was unable to tack on any more offense.

Next game: Nebraska Cornhuskers (23-26, 14-7 B1G) v. Creighton Bluejays (28-14, 11-7 MVC)


The final midweek game of 2013 is an in-state affair between the Huskers and Jays at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. On April 26 Creighton defeated Nebraska 5-3 in the lone meeting this season.
