The number-25 ranked Creighton volleyball team kicked off the 2013 season with the annual Blue-White scrimmage Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Blue team took three of the four sets to win the scrimmage. Junior Leah McNary had a match high in kills for the Blue team.
In a back-and-forth first set, the Blue team was able to gain separation and hold off White 25-20. Sophomore Melanie Jereb lead her team in kills, while junior Michelle Sicner led the Blue in assists. For the White, sophomore Lizzy Stivers collected the most kills, and freshman Kenzie Crawford had a team high in assists.
Set two saw a fast 7-0 start by the White team, who lead by as many as eight a couple times throughout the game. Blue tied the set at 20 before closing out on a 5-2 run, winning 25-22. The Blue team, down most of the set, chipped away at the deficit before finally catching and passing the White team.
White again got off to another impressive 7-0 start leading by as many as nine, before the Blue team tied the set at 24 in game three. Lauren Smith broke the tie with an ace briefly giving Blue a 25-24 lead before the White forced another tied. White finally closed out the set by scoring the final two points to win 27-25.
The fourth set had the teams playing to 15 points. At the midway point, Blue managed an 8-5 lead before the teams switched ends. After the change the Blue team closed out the White scoring seven of the match 13 points to win 15-11.
Next weekend the nationally ranked Jays begin the regular season on the road with a pair of games at the Hampton Inn Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green. The Jays open with number 13 ranked BYU on Friday, August 30 at 3:30 pm, then face the host Eagles Saturday morning at 9.
