The win marks the first time Creighton has defeated Kansas in volleyball.

Tuesday night, No. 24 Creighton volleyball returned to action against the Kansas Jayhawks of the Big XII Conference. The Jays looked to settle the score with KU following a five-set defeat to the Jayhawks in Lawrence last season.

CU (5-1) won in four sets 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 29-27 over Kansas (4-3). Three Bluejays reached double figures in kills. Kelli Browning led the team with 15 kills, Leah McNary added 14 and Lauren Smith finished with 10 on the evening. Smith also contributed nine blocks, which tied a freshman record. Michelle Sicner distributed 51 assists over four sets.

Creighton never trailed in the opening set, as they quickly built a 6-1 lead. Kansas got things evened at 10, but the Jays were able to break the tie, eventually taking the set, behind a strong performance from McNary.

In set two, it was mostly all Jayhawks. KU never trailed, leading by as many as six in the early portions of the set. KU’s offense hit .650 with 13 kills, while not making any errors, allowed them to quickly even up the score.

Tied up in the third set, the Bluejays unleashed their potent block, which has baffled nearly each opponent to date. Five rejections helped CU build an early five-point advantage before Kansas mounted a brief comeback. Melanie Jereb got her team back on track with four straight points on the serve. Errors hurt the Jayhawks as Creighton closed the set.

In the final set, the Jays and Jayhawks went back and forth with neither team running away. Tied at 20, Bird got the home team four straight points, getting the Jays to match point. Kansas countered, extending the match with three straight blocks. Creighton eventually closed out the match with Bird and Jereb converting CU’s eighth match point.

Next up for the Bluejays is a trip to Denver. They will square off with unbeaten Cal State Northridge (6-0) at 11 a.m. Friday Morning, and host Denver at 8 p.m. Saturday, the Bluejays will face No. 11 UCLA at 1 p.m., their final match in the Denver Invitational.
