The sophomore hit a trio of 3-pointers as CU moved to 4-2.
The Creighton Bluejays (4-2) continued their winning ways at D.J. Sokol Arena, defeating South Dakota (2-5) 63-48 on Tuesday night.
Marissa Janning was the Jays’ leading scorer with 20 points. The sophomore also grabbed seven rebounds.
In the opening half, Creighton shot 50 percent from the field. Jim Flanery’s squad took a 36-19 lead to the locker room with a late run to gain from separation. After a lay-up from USD’s Raeshel Contreras made it 18-14 with 7:34 remaining, the Jays finished on an 18-5 run.
South Dakota had one lead in the game, which was followed by the lone tie, but it was the Bluejays who took control the rest of the game. Janning scored 10 points in the first and CU got six points from Alyssa Kamphaus, McKenzie Fujan and Brianna Rollerson.
In the first four minutes of the second half, CU bumped the lead to a game-high 24 points. The Coyotes made one last run, cutting the deficit to 11 points with 6:16 remaining. That, however, would be the closest USD would get the rest of the way.
Creighton and South Dakota each hit a four-minute drought with five minutes left and the Bluejays up 57-43. Despite shooting just 37.9 percent in the second half, which included 1-of-7 from downtown, the Jays won by a comfortable 15-point margin.
Outside of Janning, Fujan finished with 13 points, while Kamphaus and Rollerson added 10. Sarah Nelson scored seven and Lauren Works rounded out CU’s scoring with a 3-pointer. One of the telling numbers from the boxscore was CU outscoring their opponent 38-26 in the paint, which helped pave the way for victory. The Bluejays also doubled USD in points off turnovers 14-7.
The Bluejays now lead the all-time series 12-8 between the two schools, which includes eight of the last nine. A season ago, the Jays won 53-49 in Vermillion and avenged a 56-53 OT loss at home two years ago.
Next up for Creighton is another test against at a Big XII foe. The team will head to Norman,
against the no. 18 Oklahoma Sooners (4-2) Sunday, December 1 at noon. Fans can catch the game on Fox Sports 2 (Cox - 218; Directv - 618; Dish Network 398).
