CU launched an impressive comeback but came up short, trying to hand the Cougars their first loss.

The Creighton (4-4) women’s basketball team’s second-half rally came up just short against the unbeaten BYU Cougars (8-0) at D.J. Sokol Arena.

Trailing 31-22 at the half, the Jays outscored their opponent 28-21 in the second half. Jim Flanery’s squad almost had the comeback win, but McKenzie Fujan’s jumper missed at the buzzer, resulting in the 52-51 defeat.

In the early going, the Bluejays lead 8-3, following a Fujan layup. BYU scored the next eight points and wouldn’t surrender the lead the rest of the contest. Cold shooting hindered CU, as they were just 9-of-29 in the opening half.

To make matters worse for CU, the Cougars used their inside advantage to outscore the Jays 16-8 in the paint, while besting the home team 8-3 on second chance points. Sarah Nelson led the way with 10 points in the opening half for the blue and white.

BYU started the second half on 9-0 run to get the lead to 18 points with 16:44 remaining, which was the biggest deficit Creighton would face. Last season, in Provo, the team knocked off BYU 65-62 by overcoming an 18-point deficit.

A 14-2 run gave the Bluejays hope of a repeat performance. Marissa Janning finding a rhythm fueled the run. After six points in the first half, she found her offense by attacking the basket, which led to 14 second-half points. The sophomore did most a good amount of her damage from the free throw line, shooiting 11-of-12 and finishing with a team-high 20 points.

With 1:51 remaining, Alexis Akin-Otiko got CU to within two points at 49-47. She cut the deficit to two a second time with 32 seconds left. Janning got cut the deficit to a point with eight seconds remaining. Fujan’s miss at the buzzer ended the team’s 15-game home winning streak.

Next up for Creighton is a matchup with No. 15 Nebraska (7-2) at the new Pinnacle Bank Arena, in Lincoln, with tip-off scheduled for 11 a.m..
