Pink Jays Send the Hoyas Home Blue
The Bluejays leading scorer, Doug McDermott, also received some aid from his teammates. While McDermott scored 14 points and 10 rebounds, Will Artino matched McDermott's scoring output and added five boards. Ethan Wragge, Devin Brooks and Jahenns Manigat also reached double figures, scoring 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
A shorthanded Georgetown squad relied on its pair of dynamic guards. Markel Starks led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-20 shooting, while D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera added 18.
Both offenses got off to an anemic start. Neither team reached double figures until the Hoyas' Reggie Cameron buried a three nearly 11 minutes into the first half. The Bluejays took the lead and created separation behind Wragge's shooting stroke. In a span of five minutes, the senior scored all 12 of his points, nine from 3-point range and three from the free throw line, as CU went from trailing by one to leading by seven.
The home team increased their lead over the remaining four-plus minutes and entered intermission, leading 34-24.
Greg McDermott's team did not relinquish their advantage the rest of the way. Manigat hit a pair of threes and scored all 10 of his points after the break, and Brooks scored 10 of his 11 points in the second half.
Without 6-foot-10, 350-pound center Josh Smith and junior guard Jabril Trawick, the Hoyas entered the game short on depth. The Bluejays' bench outscored the Hoyas' reserves by a 25-2 margin. The home team also beat the visitors on the glass by a 39-31 margin. Besides McDermott, Creighton's guards were active on the glass, as Brooks and Chatman each nabbed seven rebounds. Chatman also added seven assists to just one turnover in the win.
With the victory, the Jays move to 17-3 and remain atop the BIG EAST with a 7-1 record in conference play. Creighton has a short turnaround, as they welcome St. John's to town on Tuesday.
